Freehold of the Waning Moon

Caer Adeg-y-Lleuad

a noble setting for Changeling: the Dreaming

On the edge of the Duchy of Forgotten Tears, in a land the burgess name Missouri, suburbs give way to farms, and fields give way in turn to forest on a bluff above the river. Far from any major thoroughfare, and none too close to any town, one may pass a rusted gate whose faded sign reads "Crescent Hills Farm", and a smaller sign which reads "No Trespassing - Violators Will Be Prosecuted". Little can be seen from the road, and less to stir the curiosity of passers-by.

Changelings see a different sight - a formidable gateway of ornate bronze scrollwork flanked with stone pillars, their decorative finials carved to resemble harpies screaming challenge to would-be intruders. The gateway arch is surmounted by a silver crescent, and the sign proclaims in proud lettering: "Caer Adeg-y-Lleuad". By some draocht, even those kithain unfamiliar with the Cymric tongue find themselves possessed of the meaning -"Freehold of the Waning Moon".

These gates open to kithain, and the road beyond winds past fields and up hill through a patch of woods for a quarter mile or more before the freehold is seen: a grand, castellated house of pale stone proud with turrets, chimey-stacks and high gables. From its highest peak flies a black banner, showing a crescent moon upon a field of stars. At the right-hand end opens an arch into a courtyard between the carriage house stableyard and the great house itself. From here, visitors are shown through to the Hall by courteous but vigilant thanes.

Supported by the rental of its lower fields and pastures to local famers, the freehold has little congress with the mundane world. It is a retreat of the nobility, a place where highborn sidhe and their loyal supporters can escape the mundane to recreate the splendors of a bygone age. The Freehold of the Waning Moon is a gracious manor house, an elegant environment where manners are the measure of a person's merit, where the dance of precedence and protocol finds full expression, and where rumor and reputation can cut more deeply than swords.

Held by a formidable sidhe grandame, Countess Muirgen of House Eiluned, the manor commands access to several trods, making it a natural waypoint for noble travellers from other domains. This hospitality is Muirgen's sacred trust, an honor accorded her in lieu of lands rich in Dreamers. Those seeking Safe Haven are expected to pay heed to the Right of Demesne. The countess is gracious and her rules are straightforward, but those who cannot respect her or them will be shown the door. Even in these uncertain times, few question the laws of comity and guest-right. The Lady of Adeg-y-Lleuad is in her Winter years, however, and soon the choice of a new ruler must be made.
