Enclosed on four sides by sheer walls of living stone but open to the desert sky above, the courtyard of Superstition Eyrie has been made into a garden of native plants and exotic ornamentals from other arid regions of the world. The pathways through this lush, green space take a circtuitous route, winding in curves and spirals to suprise the visitor with his destination. Shaded from the noonday sun by palo verde trees, the centermost area of the garden is a clear circle of swept sand, where the Knights of the Evening Star practice their martial skills, and where matters of honor are resolved under the watchful eye of the Lord Knight, Sir Vincit Morraine. Quiet paths meander between garden beds, leading to other bowers set in the corners of the courtyard. Each of these provides a vista carefully cultivated to delight the eye and soothe the mind. In the center of the farthest wall, a fountain bubbles from the stone into a dim pool. It is said that those who look into its waters with a calm heart are sometimes vouchsafed visions of what is, what has been or what will be. From the half-glimpsed bottom of the pond, coins offered by previous visitors glitter like stars below the waters. Glamour is ever fickle, however, and even the donation of a coin of Dross will not guarantee a visitor receive a vision. These come most frequently when unlooked for. |
