Joining Play at Waning Moon

a short introduction to Caer Adeg-y-Lleuad
for new players

Welcome to the Freehold of the Waning Moon. Your interest in this Changeling setting means a lot to us, so we've prepared this page to try to answer as many of your questions as we can regarding how you can bring a character into play in this setting.

Q: Is this an open setting?

A: Yes and no. Yes, we are open to new players, but as an established setting which is player-moderated, not all character concepts work well at Caer Adeg-y-Lleuad. Before you bring a character into play, please read this FAQ, the Player Guidelines, the rest of this website, and as much of the mailing list archives as you can. During this time, you should also watch the scenes in play, to ascertain the mood of the setting and the appropriate style of play. Please do not bring a character in blind, and expect other players to interrupt their scene to accomodate your IC and OOC questions.

Q: What kind of character can I play?

A: Waning Moon is a kithain freehold. Any of the nine major kiths listed in the Changeling core book may be played, although some may be less appropriate than others (redcaps come to mind).

Q: Is this setting for noble characters only?

A: No. It is merely a freehold which is ruled by the Seelie nobility.

Q: Can I play a commoner?

A: Yes. Commoner characters are encouraged.

Q: I really like a kith from a Changeling supplement. May I play that instead?

A: Because of the nature of the setting, some character types are less appropriate to others. Exceptions can be made by acquiring general consent from the other players, by submitting the request to the mailing list. Types that are likely to receive permission include clurichaun and piskies, who are essentially ordinary kithain. Merfolk, dark kin, thallain, or hsien would probably not be accepted in this setting.

Q: I have a Vampire (Mage/Werewolf/Wraith/Hunter) character with Faerie Affinity (or fae blood). Can I play them in this setting?

A: No. At this time, the setting does not support crossover play. Your character may, of course, interact with Caer Adeg characters when they play in another Necropolis setting, or in private scenes. The freehold itself is off-limits to and well-hidden from Prodigals, however.

Q: Are there special rules for character creation?

A: Yes. Player Guidelines outlines policies regarding character creation and submission.

Q: Is there anything else I should do to make my character more likely to be approved?

A: Yes. Please read the other pages below to garner an idea of the setting as already established. Having a solid, in-character reason for being at Caer Adeg-y-Lleuad, as well as catering to a traditional, noble-ruled freehold of House Eiluned in your character's concept, will greatly ease approval. Keeping your Traits at a low level generally is also appreciated, as is minimizing your use of Merits and Flaws.

Q: What kiths or concepts are under-represented? What does the setting need?

A: Commoners are under-represented. Assistant stewards, reeves, heralds, troubadours and squires, as well as craftspeople, pages, footmen, chambermaids and other types are also in short supply.

Q: Is there any type of character that you already have in abundance, that I should therefore try to avoid?

A: We are running toward too many sidhe. Combat-oriented characters (knights and thanes) are also well-represented. Please bear this in mind when choosing a character to play here.

Q: Can I play a character who has a history at Waning Moon, and has been there for some time already?

A: Yes. This is actually encouraged. It does demand familiarity with the setting and also with the other characters concerned. Taking the time to build a character into the setting this way enhances the sense of the setting as a place with an ongoing history. Most established players will be willing to assist in creating a comaptible history if such a request is made to the mailing list.

Q: May I bring my pre-existing Changeling character to Waning Moon?

A: Characters from other settings are welcome as visitors, however actions/powers/plotlines that may disrupt the established setting must first be approved by the mailing list, and even if accepted may be over-ruled if they prove disruptive.

Q: I would like to have my character presented to the Countess Muirgen. How can I arrange this?

A: At the moment, there is not yet an established time for regular audiences with Her Excellency, although by making a request on-list to meet with the countess, an audience can be arranged. Audiences may be played in the chats, or privately by email as preferred.

Q: Where is Caer Adeg-y-Lleuad?

A: Caer-Adeg-y-Lleuad is the ruling seat of the County of Whitethorn, one of the outling domains of the Duchy of Forgotten Tears, corresponding to the Kansas City metropolitan area and surrounding countryside, within the Kingdom of Grass. Waning Moon is a manor house with extensive grounds on a forested bluff that faces east above a bend in the Missouri River.

Q: Who rules Waning Moon?

A: Caer Adeg-y-Lleuad is the freehold of a sidhe noblewoman of House Eiluned, Muirgen Caileadair, the Countess of Whitethorn. She in turn owes fealty to Her Grace, Medea Taithseach of House Eiluned, the Duchess of Forgotten Tears. This duchess is a vassal of Her Majesty, Mary-Elizabeth of House Dougal, Queen of Grass.

Q: Are these nobles Player Characters?

A: No. A player does run the Countess Muirgen, but her overarching policy decisions are decided by the list. Neither the Duchess nor the Queen are on-stage presences at Caer Adeg, but rather exists in the background, and rarely if ever will affect the course of a storyline.

Q: Are there Storyteller-run adventures as Waning Moon?

A: So far, we have simply been concentrating on establishing the setting and introducing characters. However we do plan to host adventures run by volunteer Storytellers from time to time.

Q: How are Experience Points allocated at Waning Moon?

A: Since there is no single Storyteller for Caer Adeg-y-Lleuad, we are at present running on an "honor system" basis. As a suggestion, awarding your character 1 experience point for each 2-week period should be adequate for a character in regular play. Alotting a few extra points for significant achievements or setbacks is also appropriate. It is better to take too few Experience Points than too many.

Q: I have questions which aren't addressed here. Who should I ask?

A: Address further questions to the Caer Adeg-y-Lleuad mailing list. You can subscribe to this list at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/newhold. Please do not interrupt in-character scenes with questions if it can possibly be avoided.
